One in five aldermen appointed after the last local elections in 2014 has failed to last their full term in office and 44 of them lost their jobs because of integrity issues, Trouw said on Wednesday.

Dutch local councils had a total of 1,449 aldermen in 2014, of whom 285 have since left or been sacked. Political conflict about budgets, construction projects and shop opening hours were other major reasons for aldermen to step down.

Among the integrity issues cited by the paper are inappropriate sexual behaviour, drink driving and the intimidation of civil servants.
