Some 1.4 million people in the Netherlands now have a motorbike driving licence, of whom 800,000 are over the age of 50, the national statistics office CBS said on Tuesday.

Last year, 27,000 people passed their motorbike test, the highest number since 2003. Motorbikes are most popular in Drenthe and Zeeland.

The over-50s are not only more likely to have a licence but are also more likely to have a motorbike. In 2017, there were 656,000 motorbikes in the Netherlands of which half were owned by the over-50s. Thats a rise of nearly 40,000 over three years, the CBS said.
