The giant lobster saved by a Haarlem woman from being turned into a Christmas feast has died at his new home at the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk.

The 8.2 kilo lobster, thought to be as much as 80 years old and nicknamed Louis, was rescued by Yvonne van Eerden, who bought it at a charity auction on December 19. She then donated the crustacean to the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk.

‘I thought it was a shame to eat something so big and which had lived for 80 years,’ Van Eerden told the AD. ‘So I decided to save the lobster and support a good cause at the same time.’

Van Eerden, who paid €400 to free Louis, had originally hoped to return the lobster to Canada, where he probably came from.

Experts say that they suspect all the moving around may have proved fatal to the lobster because it was so old. ‘But of course, we don’t really know,’ a spokesman told RTL news.

The lobster has now been sent to the sea life centre on the Wadden Sea island of Texel for further examination.
