There was a 40% increase in the amount of solar power generated in the Netherlands last year while wind power production was up by one third, according to new figures from monitoring website energieopwek.nl.

In total, renewables now account for 10% of energy production in the Netherlands, the website is quoted as saying by news agency ANP. Energieopwek.nl is a joint initiative between energy companies and grid operators.

From next year, the website will also publish the amount of energy produced by geothermal systems.

By 2020, 14% of energy produced in the Netherlands should come from renewable sources, in order to meet targets set down by industry and the government.
