VVV Venlo has said it will take action against a group of supporters who hurled racist abuse at PSV Eindhoven’s black players during the weekend Eredivisie match between the clubs.

A small group of supporters was filmed shouting monkey chants and other abuse at the players as they walked up a staircase from the pitch in Venlo’s De Koel stadium. VVV later apologised to PSV for the incident and said those responsible would be sanctioned.

‘These deplorable racist noises have no place in a football stadium and are incompatible with the core values of our club,’ said a spokesman. ‘We will do all we can to identify the culprits and take appropriate measures against them.’

PSV came back from 2-1 down during the game to win 5-2 and now sit five points clear at the top of the Dutch premier league.
