Police officer questioned over GeenStijl’s central station leak

Amsterdam’s central station

A police officer has been arrested for leaking information to shock blog GeenStijl about an incident in which a car drove into several people in front of  Amsterdam’s central station, news website Nu.nl said on Friday.

Police classed the incident, which occurred on June 10 and in which several people were wounded, as an accident. The driver of the car is a diabetic and suffered a blackout due to his medical condition, police believe.

Earlier this week, GeenStijl published a screen grab of the man’s file online, revealed him to have a Moroccan background, and commented that the leak suggests ‘that it is very doubtful the man suffered a blackout due to a medical condition’.

The police immediately launched an investigation.‘It is a gross dereliction of duty. The public has to be assured that police can be trusted with their information,’ police spokesman Leo Dortland told the Volkskrant

The police officer was arrested on Thursday and is now being investigated by the police integrity department. The public prosecution department will decide later if he should face criminal charges.
