Ajax meets Rosenborg, Utrecht draws Zenit in play-offs

Amsterdam football club Ajax will meet Norway’s Rosenborg BK in their second attempt to win a place in European football in the coming season.

Ajax narrowly failed to win a place in the Champions League and must now go through another qualifying round to make it into the Europa League group stage.

At Friday’s draw in Nyon, Switzerland, the Amsterdammers were matched against the current Norwegian champions. They first meet at home on August 17 and play the return leg a week later.

FC Utrecht, who have survived two qualifying rounds already, will meet Zenit St Petersburg, who finished third in the Russian league last season. Utrecht on Thursday put out Lech Poznan of Poland to make the final qualifying round.

PSV Eindhoven were not so lucky. They were put out by Croatia’s NK Osijek. It is the first time in 44 years that PSV have not made it through to European competition. Vitesse of Arnhem have already qualified for the Europa League group round as winners of the KNVB Cup.
