Utrecht town hall scene of bitter bitterbal fight

Utrecht city council is in an uproar about the number of bitterballen, a popular Dutch snack, which can be served after meetings at the town hall, local broadcaster RTV Utrecht reports.

The bitterballen fight was started by animal rights party Partij voor de Dieren which proposed to replace fifty percent of the meat-based bitterballen with vegan or vegetarian snacks.

Last week’s motion was unexpectedly supported by GroenLinks and D66, much to the dismay of the VVD which, although not opposed on principle to vegetarian snacks, feels that people should have the right to choose.

It is now proposing an individual vote to challenge the strict 50/50 division of snacks at the town hall, the broadcaster says.
