Some 16% of Dutch households say they don’t have enough money to go away on holiday, according to research by the European statistics office Eurostat.

Throughout the EU as a whole, one third of households say they are too poor to pay for a week-long break. This is down from 38% in 2011, Eurostat said.

Sweden has the fewest households which cannot afford a holiday – just 8%, Eurostat said. The poorest households are in Romania, where two-thirds cannot pay for a break.

Over half the households in Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus and Hungary were also in this position.
