Girl, 5, drowns at Sloterplas beach

Police cordon at the Haaksbergen crash siteA five-year-old girl drowned in the Sloterplas artificial beach in Amsterdam on Sunday, according to the police.

The girl, named by the AD as Kalaine, had been playing on the busy beach and disappeared from sight.

A search by divers from the fire service found the girl inanimate in the water and she was taken to hospital. But she could not be revived and was pronounced dead.

The emergency services, report police, are treating it as a ‘fatal accident’.

The AD reports that the Brazilian girl had been told not to go into the water, but that she did not have armbands on and had disappeared from sight.

It reports that at the place where she drowned, a man has written ‘rest in peace’ in the sand and lit two candles.
