Two men have been sentenced to 16 and 14 years in jail for the notorious ‘Posbank’ murder in 2003, reports NOS.

Frank S. and Souris R. were sentenced for killing Alex Wiegmink at the Posbank nature reserve near Arnhem, although the stronger crime of murder could not be proven.

The prosecution had demanded a 13-year sentence for both, saying that the fact that they remained silent for so long and showed no respect for the remaining members of family, played a part.

Frank S. received a shorter sentence as he had gone to the police last year, after a television crime show featured the case. The other criminal was arrested shortly afterwards.

The prosecution claimed Wiegmink had been taking a run and the men had intended to steal his car. But he caught them at it, was not intimidated by threats of violence, and was shot by one of the pair.

His body was brought to Erp, North Brabant, in his car and then set alight inside the vehicle. The murder had been unsolved for more than a decade.
