IT failure leaves Dutch police unable to issue automatic fines

Dutch police have been left unable to long into their computers remotely because of internet problems and the system for automatically producing fines has failed, the AD said on Wednesday afternoon.

The problems are not connected to Tuesday’s Petya cyber attack using ransomware, which led the police to shut down some systems as a precaution, the paper said.

‘It is not as if the police can’t write out tickets, but it has to be done in the old fashioned way, using pen and paper,’ spokesman Marten Schwandt told the paper.

Schwandt said it is unclear what actually caused the internet failure and how long it will take to fix.
