Insurers in the Netherlands paid out some €30bn in claims, benefits and pensions in 2016, insurers lobby group Verbond van Verzekeraars said in its financial annual report published on Thursday.

In addition they paid for the repairs on  one million vehicles as well as for damages related to 40,000 burglaries, 100,000 household fires and 300,000 cases of water damage.

The heavy hail storm on 23 June in Noord-Brabant and Limburg provinces caused about €500m in damages in only a few minutes, the group said.
