Cheers! Craft beer takes off in the Netherlands as brewery numbers soar

June 13, 2017

The number of breweries in the Netherlands has quadrupled in the past 10 years, to 370 in 2017 from only 90 in 2007, the national statistics office CBS said on Tuesday.

Most are small craft breweries and are located overwhelmingly in Amsterdam, the CBS said.

A full 270 of the 370 breweries employed only one person, a rise from only 40 a decade ago. But the number of breweries with a payroll of between two to five also increased to 60 from 20 in 2007. And the number of breweries employing five or more people rose to 35 in 2017 from 25.

The Telegraaf says beer is being turned out in hundreds of sheds, garages and kitchens throughout the country all stocked with malt, hops, orange peels, spices or anything else deemed necessary for the crafted products.

Amsterdam is the beer capital of the Netherlands with 45 small breweries, or more than 10% of the total. As a result Noord-Holland province has overtaken both Noord-Brabant and Limburg provinces which formerly held the crown.

Noord-Holland province now has 95 breweries, the CBS said, up from about 10 a decade ago.
