Ajax captain Davy Klaassen is moving to English club Everton in a €27m deal, one of the biggest transfers ever involving a Dutch player.

Klaassen, who has signed for five seasons, will join Dutch coach Ronald Koeman who is at the helm of the Liverpool club.

Klaassen, 24, has played for the top Ajax team for six years. The midfielder is a product of a special Ajax training programme and has captained Ajax for the past two seasons.

Ajax player policy director Marc Overmars said he would rather have kept Klaassen for another season. ‘But Davy is 24. He has played for the top team for six years after going through our entire youth programme. He is now ready for the next step in his career.’

Marc Overmars himself is the most expensive Dutch player to date. He cost €40m when he moved from Arsenal to Barcelona.
