Police with dogs and carrying riot batons were brought in to break up parties hosted by several beach bars at Bloemendaal, east of Haarlem, on Sunday night.

The event was so busy that police had urged people to stop coming to the resort area earlier in the evening because there was nowhere left to park.

It is unclear from the media reports why the police decided to break up the party early, but several people were arrested for failing to follow instructions and leave the area, a spokesman told the Telegraaf.

According to broadcaster NOS, the beach bar owners had asked the police to intervene because it was so busy.

On Thursday, police arrested several dozen people as fights broke out in Hoek van Holland, where the beach bar season officially opened.

First aid posts at the North Sea beach resort worked overtime to deal with some 200 people taken ill, due to a combination of sun, alcohol and drugs, the Telegraaf said.
