Giant pandas ready to face their Dutch public

Two giant pandas on loan to the Ouwehands zoo in Rhenen will go on view to the public on Wednesday, the zoo said on its website.

Xing Ya and Wu Wen arrived in the Netherlands on April 12 and have been in quarantine and getting used to their new accommodation since then.

The Pandasia complex, which cost the zoo €7m, will be formally opened by the Chinese ambassador to the Netherlands Wu Ken and zoo owner Marcel Boekhoorn later on Tuesday.

People who want to visit the panda enclosure have to buy tickets online before they arrive and a maximum 10,000 tickets a day are available.

However, the expected rush on tickets has not yet materialised, the Telegraaf said. There are still tickets for June, July and August and the zoo computer system says visiting times are ‘quiet’.

The first four days of panda visiting hours have been reserved for zoo season ticket holders and lottery winners.
