Albert Heijn, Media Markt and Action top favourite retail rankings

Albert Heijn and white goods giant Media Markt are the best performing and most future-proof retail formats in the Netherlands, according to new research by retail consultancy Q&A published on Tuesday.

Budget household goods store Action is the most ‘unmissable’ shop in the Dutch high street while Lush and Rituals, both cosmetics, make most people happy, Q&A said.

Almost 5,000 Dutch consumers were asked about 173 different retailers for the survey.  Retailers such as Kwantum (DIY), Kijkshop (household goods) and Trekpleister (chemists) are the least likely to be missed if they would disappear.

Q&A says three factors are important to ensure a retail chain has a future: a good online profile, a physical presence which is different to the rest and the assets to generate a lot of visitors.

Nevertheless, Q&A points out, popular chains like Action and budget clothes group Primark have no web shops. And 60% of the shoppers polled by Q&A said they would like to shop at Primark online.
