An 89-year-old woman appeared in court in Amsterdam on Monday charged with murdering her husband of 63 years.

The woman, named as Antonia M, is accused of stabbing her husband Evert, 88, at their home in the city district of Watergraafsmeer in January 2015. She claims he died as the result of a fall.

Evert was in poor health, incontinent and rarely left the house, and the couple had few visitors, the court was told.

Antonia M, questioned in court, said that she was almost entirely responsible for her husband’s care. ‘But that is life, and you have to go on,’ she said.

The couple had no outside help and their arguments occasionally became violent, the court was told. Antonia has admitted kicking her ‘self-willed’ husband several times, the AD reported.

The public prosecution service said that despite her age, she should be jailed for four years for the murder. ‘I will never go to jail,’ M said after hearing the sentencing demand. ‘At my age, I won’t get out alive.’

The court will present its ruling on April 24.
