Amsterdam bourse watchdog AFM levied fewer fines for a lower amount last year than it did in 2015. However, the number of warnings it issued increased in 2016, the AFM said in its annual report.

The report shows the body levied 15 fines in 2016 totalling €8.5m, two down on 2015. The four main accountancy firms were hit the hardest for laxity in the monitoring of their clients’ financial results, paying just over €6m in total.

The number of warnings issued by the AFM increased to 650 from 575 in 2015. Many of these were issued to boiler room operations which pressure investors to part with their money.
