Colder winter drove up Dutch energy usage in 2016

The Netherlands used 2% more energy last year than in 2015, due largely to the colder weather, national statistics office CBS said on Friday.

Oil, gas and coal accounted for 92% of the country’s total energy use, while the share of green energy fell from 4.7% to 3.6% of the total. Nuclear energy accounts for around 1%.

The amount of coal used to generate electricity fell by around 10%, due to the closure of three old power stations. The amount of gas used in the Netherlands last year rose due to imports, as less was extracted from under Groningen province.
