Belgians continue to sweep through the Dutch media sector

The Belgians are continuing to gobble up the Dutch media and are now placing Belgian nationals in charge of Dutch news. Mediahuis, which is nearing closure of its successful struggle to gain control of TMG, is proposing its own CEO Marc Vangeel as boss of the Dutch company as well, the Telegraaf said on Thursday.

TMG is publisher of the largest circulation Dutch paper the Telegraaf. Mediahuis already owns the NRC and and several large regional publications. The Parool, Volkskrant and AD are owned by Persgroep, which is also a Belgian firm.

Mediahuis now controls 59.98% of TMG shares and Dutch media mogul John de Mol who holds 28.7%, is not prepared to surrender his shares.

Mediahuis is also proposing Koos Boot, a Dutch national, as CFO of TMG. Boot was CFO of Dutch publisher Wegener and is now holding the same position ad interim at printing house Roto Smeets.

TMG’s supervisory board will also have a Belgian majority under Mediahuis which is proposing Gert Ysebaert, Paul Verwilst and Guus van Puijenbroek. Current TMG supervisory board members Jan Nooitgedagt and Simone Brummelhuis will serve as independent members of the board.
