A woman has died after getting out of a car while it was stopped beside a motorway during a row with her partner.

Police said the woman was knocked down as she tried to cross the A10 near Amsterdam. Her partner, who followed her across the road, was hit and seriously injured by another passing car.

The incident happened just before midnight on Sunday between the city and Schiphol airport, NOS reported. In total four women and a man were in the car, which had Polish numberplates. Police said the woman who died appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The road was closed for several hours between Oud-Zuid and the De Nieuwe Meer intersection. Police have asked for witnesses to contact them.
