Traffic chaos around Amsterdam after fire in Schiphol tunnel

The A4 motorway tunnel under Schiphol airport will be closed heading for The Hague until at least after the Tuesday morning rush-hour following a small fire, officials said on Monday.

The closure of the tunnel on Monday afternoon led to delays of up to an hour around Amsterdam, with tailbacks reaching the A5 and A9 as drivers sought alternative routes.

The tunnel will remain closed to traffic while emergency repair work is carried out on the electronic monitoring and warning systems.

The shut-down has also affected public transport, with bus services forced to make lengthy diversions. Train services through the tunnel are not affected.
