In total 71 of the 150 MPs in the Dutch lower house of parliament are bowing out on Wednesday as the newly elected members prepare to take their seats.

Just three of the current line up of 35 Labour MPs will form part of the new-look parliament, which will be sworn in on Thursday.

Labour parliamentarian Khadija Arib, who is the current parliamentary chairwoman, is likely to stay in that position after none of the other main parties put forward a challenger.

By contrast, all 13 of the current group of Christian Democrat MPs remain in parliament and are joined by six new colleagues. All the current ChristenUnie, GroenLinks and SGP MPs are also returning to The Hague.

There is also a major shake-up within the VVD, where 22 sitting MPs are bowing out. They include former junior justice minister Fred Teeven and former parliamentary chairwoman Anouchka van Miltenburg.

Socialist MP Harry van Bommel is also leaving active politics after nearly 20 years in parliament. His departure means SGP leader Kees van der Staaij is the longest-serving MP, with Geert Wilders in second place.

MPs who lose their jobs are entitled to 80% of their salary for the first year, followed by 70% for a further two years and two months.
