The Dutch government posted a budget suplus of €2.9bn in 2016, its first surplus since 2008, the national statistics office CBS said on Friday.

The surplus amounts to 0.4% of GNP – in actual terms the highest ever.  The was a budget deficit of 2.1% in 2015.

The improvement stemmed largely from performance in the final quarter of the year. This was due to strong export growth and increased household spending, the CBS said.
