Low housing stock a threat to estate agents, bankruptcies loom

Estate agents in Amsterdam and Utrecht are facing problems due to the low level of housing stock, Dutch estate agents association NVM Ger Jaarsma told the Telegraaf on Thursday.

Jaarsma said the housing stock in both cities is so low that estate agents are making fewer sales and therefore do not have the necessary cash flow to survive. He expects the first bankruptcies this year.

The NVM chairman said it is necessary to keep building new housing. This is being done in Amsterdam but not in Utrecht, he said, adding there is a shortage of housing stock in Eindhoven and Groningen as well.
