Dutch technology firm plans self-drive system in Dubai

Utrecht-based technology company 2getthere is to supply Dubai with a new automated vehicle system, the company announced on Wednesday.
The system will move up to 5,000 passengers an hour in driverless vehicles, and will be the largest of its sort in the world, the company said.
The transport system will link Bluewaters Island, which is under construction off the coast of Dubai, with the city’s metro network. The system is part of a project headed by construction group Meraas of the United Arab Emirates. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Bluewaters Island will be home to Ain Dubai, the world’s largest and highest big wheel. The new island lies 500 metres off the coast of Jumeirah Beach Residence, near Dubai Marina.
The Dutch automatic transport system fits in with Dubai’s objective to have 25% of all trips completed by automated systems by 2035. The Bluewater project will feature 25 driverless Group Rapid Transit (GRT) vehicles capable of carrying 24 passengers each.
