The Netherlands elects a new government in 10 days time and this weekend the parties are out campaigning hard. Here’s a round up of the latest campaign news.

CDA backs national anthem

Christian Democrat leader Sybrand Buma wants school pupils to learn the national anthem – the Wilhelmus – at school and to stand up while they sing it, he told the Telegraaf. ‘The royal family should not be insulted, because that is an insult to us all,’ he told the paper.

The traditions which the Netherlands holds dear should be much more explicit, Buma said, adding that he is not worried about being seen as old fashioned. ‘A lot of what we have lost was not so wrong,’ Buma said.

The CDA is currently creeping up on the VVD and PVV in the polls.

Revenge porn a crime

The ChristUnie would like to make revenge porn a crime and if the next government does not take up the issue, the party will issue its own draft legislation, CU leader Gert0Jan Segers told Nu.nl.

‘This is a relatively new phenomenon and it needs clear boundaries and monitoring. That includes using criminal law,’ he said.

There have been a string of incidents recently involving revenge porn in the Netherlands, most recently centring on television personality Patricia Paay.

25% have made up their minds

With just 10 days to go, one in four voters have not yet made up their mind who to pick on March 15, according to I&O research.

One in five people have no clue who to vote for and 55% can’t decided between two or more parties, the polling organisation said.
