Spring came early to many parts of the country on Wednesday, just three days after the Netherlands was blanketed by snow.

In Maastricht, the temperature reached as high as 17 degrees, the warmest ever February 14 on record. The previous record in the southern town dated from 1958, when it hit 16.5 degrees.

The average for the time of year is five to six degrees, weather bureau Weeronline said.

However, the forecast for the next few days is not so promising. According to the KNMI, the next few days will be overcast with some showers although it will still be warmer than usual in February.
