Travellers at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport are facing lengthy delays on Wednesday because of problems with the air traffic control computer system.

By midday, flights were being delayed by upwards of an hour and there were reports that some incoming flights had been cancelled. According to broadcaster NOS, five incoming flights have been diverted to other airports and seven scrapped altogether.

The problem was solved by around 3.30pm, but passengers were still being advised to keep an eye on the airport’s website for further information. However, the airport’s new-look site no longer carries an overview of all arrivals and departures, making it difficult to assess the overall situation.

Schiphol normally handles some 160,000 passengers a day and is one of the busiest airports in Europe.
