Membership of the left-wing green party GroenLinks shot up over 10% last year, following the appointment of new leader Jesse Klaver, according to Groningen University research.

The party, which currently has just four MPs, now has nearly 23,400 members, the researchers said. The pro-animal PvdD and Liberal democratic D66 also saw membership growth of 6% and almost 4% respectively.

Among the new parties, Denk now has 3,600 members and VNL, formed by two former PVV MPs, has 2,000.

By contrast, membership of the ruling VVD fell by almost 7% and the Socialists lost 5% of their members.

The PVV has no membership system and Geert Wilders is the only official member.
