Sunday night was the coldest of the year so far
The temperature fell to below -10 degrees in eastern parts of the Netherlands on Sunday night.
The coldest place was Twente airfield, where the temperature dropped to -10.8 degrees, according to weather bureau Weerplaza.
The heavy frost means that the thickness of the ice has improved in many places, but the Dutch skating union KNSB is still warning people to avoid skating on lakes and frozen canals because of the risks.
The Telegraaf says dozens of people went through the ice while skating outdoors at the weekend.
This week there is likely to be a light frost every nights but during the day it will be above freezing point and the ice will begin to melt.
While there may be some showers in the north on Monday and sleet in the south east, the rest of the week it will be dry with sunny spells, the KNMI said.
