Major power cut in Amsterdam, public transport disrupted
Large parts of Amsterdam and Zaandam were hit by a power cut on Tuesday morning, halting all train services too and from the city as well as tram services.
A spokesman for grid operator Liander told news agency Nu.nl that the problems were caused by a fault in the grid.
In total, some 360,000 households were affected by the power cut which began around 4am. Power has since been restored to parts of the city but 88,000 households were still without electricity by 7.30am.
Commuters
Although power is back in the city centre, train services have not yet been resumed because of problems with the signals and points. This has has a knock-on effect on rail services nationwide.
The transport ministry’s road department warned of heavy rush hour traffic around Amsterdam as commuters use alternative methods to get to work.
