Dutch Afghan, who murdered in Almere, is now on trial in Britain

A gavel in a courtroom.

An Afghan national who spent seven years in jail in the Netherlands for murdering a Chinese woman in Almere is on trial in Brtain for attacking two police officers with a claw hammer.

The Daily Mail says Afghan-born Jamshid Piruz, who has permanent residency rights in the Netherlands, was allowed to enter Britain unchallenged despite being a convicted murderer.  British MPs have condemned the lack of checks on offenders from the EU, the paper said.

European countries have no obligation to alert other member states about convictions of murderers or sex offenders, the paper pointed out.

British politicians now want the government to introduce ‘a tougher US-style warning system to flag up whether any traveller has a conviction as they attempt to enter Britain.’

Piruz will be sentenced on Friday after pleading guilty to attacking the two police officers just a few days after arriving in Britain. He had also attacked staff at Gatwick airport when he arrived in Britain but was released by local magistrates.

Piruz served seven years of a 12 year jail sentence after being found guilty of murdering his Chinese female tenant in what the court said was a frenzied attack. The Dutch court rejected his claim of insanity.
