Two police officers were injured by an explosion in or near a police car on Tuesday night in Spaarndam, north of Amsterdam, the Telegraaf has reported. One of the officers is in critical condition. The officers were part of a special arrest team.

The car exploded at around 18:30. ‘I was sitting inside listening to music when I heard a very loud bang. It was a really big explosion, the whole house shook. I didn’t know what was happening and went for a look, which is when I saw two police officers lying on the bridge in front of the fence,’ an eye witness said.

A police spokesperson said that they don’t currently think it was an attack. The explosion might have been from the squad’s own explosives, which they keep in their cars. It is not clear yet why the team was there to begin with.
