Traffic congestion in the Netherlands rose by 12% this year compared with 2015, motoring organisation ANWB said on Friday.

The increase is partly due to the improved economic climate and jams are likely to get worse in the coming years, the organisation said.

Commuters faced a 6% rise in traffic jams in the morning rush hour and 14% increase in the afternoon. But outside rush hours – between 10.00 and 15.30 – congestion was up 21%, the ANWB said.

The worst commute of the year was the evening of November 1, when 928 kilometres of jams built up on the Dutch road network. The worst traffic jam blackspot is the A4 from The Hague to Amsterdam, between Leidschendam and Zoeterwoude, the ANWB said.
