Formula One racing car driver Max Verstappen and gymnast Sanne Wevers can add Sports Personality of the Year awards to their victories in 2016.

Verstappen, 19, was not at the ceremony to pick up his prize because he is on holiday. The youngster won the Spanish Grand Prix and picked up a place on the podium in six other races.

Wever, 25, won the first ever Dutch Olympic gold in gymnastics when she was a surprise winner of the beam at the Rio games. Her father Vincent took the coach of the year award at Wednesday night’s ceremony.

The team of the year award went to rowing duo Maaike Head and Ilse Paulis, who won gold in the lightweight double sculls in Rio. Swimmer Lisette Bruinsma was named Paralympian of the year.
