Trump will be ‘judged by his deeds’, says Dutch foreign minister

Bert KoendersDutch foreign minister Bert Koenders has issued the first Dutch government reaction to Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election, by saying he will be judged by his actions.

‘We will judge him by his deeds,’ Koenders said in a short statement, without congratulating the new president on his victory. ‘The American people have spoken.’

Koender said the rhetoric used during the election campaign worried him. ‘During the campaign, Trump made statements which completely contradict how we would like to see our society and world order – on Nato, the relationship with Russia and Europe and on different population groups,’ Koenders said.

He referred to the importance of the Dutch relationship with the US, which generates some 600,000 jobs in the Netherlands.

‘We need each other in today’s world,’ he said. ‘We are facing global challenges such as climate change and counter-terrorism and we have to work together to tackle the crises in the ring of instability around Europe.’

Prime minister Mark Rutte issued a statement on Facebook in which he said he ‘warmly wished’ Trump good luck with his election.

‘As allies and partners, the Netherlands and the US work closely together to create a safer and more prosperous world,’ the prime minister said.

‘The Netherlands and the US have a long history together. I assume the new American government will continue to work with the Netherlands and the rest of the world on the basis of shared values and principles, in line with the strong American tradition.’

‘I look forward to continuing our good working relationship with the new American government,’ the prime minister said.
