Most minor crimes, like vandalism, are not reported: CBS

Police badge and radio.

Only 36% of the crimes committed in the Netherlands last year were actually reported to the police, the national statistics office CBS said on Tuesday.

Almost one in five of the over 15s say they were the victim of a crime last year but some crimes, such as vandalism and cybercrime, are unlikely to be reported.

While 90% of all burglaries are reported to the police, just 13% of cases of cybercrime and 20% of incidents of vandalism appear in official crime reports.

The main reasons people have for not reporting crime are ‘it won’t help’ and ‘it is not important’, the CBS said.
