There has been a sharp rise in the number of medical errors reported to the health ministry by hospitals, broadcaster NOS said on Wednesday.

Health inspectors received 958 reports of medical mistakes in 2015 as a whole, but 752 reports in the first six months of this year, the broadcaster said.

Inspectors have welcomed the increase in the registration of mistakes and say that the subsequent investigations will benefit patient safety. Media attention for medical errors has boosted awareness of the reporting process and the situation in hospitals has not become more dangerous, the inspectors say.

Meanwhile, research published by the national statistics office CBS on Wednesday shows people working in the healthcare sector experience more pressure than other professions.

Over half of healthcare workers report having to complete ‘an extreme number of tasks’ and 25% say their job is ’emotionally demanding’.

In total, 1.2 million people work in healthcare, of whom around 500,000 are employed in hospitals, mental health care services and as family doctors. Eight in 10 healthcare workers are women.
