Driving tests at 17 a success, will be made permanent
An experiment allowing teenagers to take their driving test as soon as they hit 17 is to be made permanent, transport minister Melanie Schultz said on Friday.
The 2toDrive scheme allows teenagers to start lessons at 16 and take the test as soon as they turn 17. They can then drive with a designated coach until they turn 18 and get a full licence.
Since the experiment started in 2011, 170,000 17-year-olds have passed their driving test.
Allowing youngsters who’ve passed the test with an adult gives them more experience behind the wheel and reduces the chance of accidents, Schultz said.
