A man has been arrested at Schiphol airport after smuggling 10 birds into the Netherlands, hidden in toilet rolls.

The man had arrived on a flight from Suriname when he was stopped. The toilet rolls had been perforated to allow in air but it is unclear if all the birds survived the journey. Nor have officials said what sort of birds were involved.

The birds have been placed in quarantine while officials decide what should be done with them.

The smuggler has been questioned and released.
