VVD MPs register by far the most gifts
Some two-thirds of the presents given to MPs by third parties go the ruling right-wing VVD, according to the parliamentary gifts register.
MPs have to register the gifts themselves, and it could be that VVD parliamentarians are stricter about doing so, broadcaster RTL Nieuws said on Friday.
Since January this year, MPs have registered 321 gifts, of which 215 were given to the 40 VVD MPs. The Liberal democratic party D66 is in second place with 29 gifts split between 12 MPs. In third place is 50Plus, which registered 20 presents but has just one MP.
The most popular MP was the VVD’s sports spokesman Rudmer Heerema, who registered 27 gifts. These included seven tickets for the recent European athletics championships, a free trip to the TT motorbike races in Assen, tickets to football matches plus numerous other competitions and awards.
