At least 250 Dutch webshops have been hit by hackers who installed software capable of skimming off customer credit card details, the Telegraaf said on Wednesday.

The figures come from online security expert Willem de Groot, who researches attacks on internet retailers. He has found evidence of skimming on 5,900 online shops worldwide.

The hacks on Dutch webshops does not involve big names, the Telegraaf said.

De Groot suggests companies such as Visa or Mastercard could revoke the payment licence of ‘sloppy merchants’ who do not take customer security seriously. ‘But it would be way more efficient if Google would add the compromised sites to its Chrome Safe Browsing blacklist,’ De Groot said.
