A record 375,000 people are expected to attend the 21st edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event which kicks off on Wednesday, the organisers say.

In total, 2,200 artists will perform over the five days of the festival at 140 different locations. The line-up includes top Dutch djs such as Afrojack, Hardwell and Martin Garrix.

As well as dance, the ADE includes conferences, readings and documentaries focusing on all aspects of dance and electronic music.

The success of the event highlights the importance of dance to the Dutch economy, according to a report in advertising industry magazine Adformatie.

Last year, 23% of the Dutch attended a dance event, and seven in 10 see dance as a key component of the national culture, according to a recent report by ING.
