Amsterdam cyclist hit by police minibus dies

Police cordon at the Haaksbergen crash site

A cyclist who was hit by a police minibus in Amsterdam on Tuesday night has died of his injuries, the public prosecution department has confirmed.

Local broadcaster AT5 says the 34-year-old cyclist was hit on the Nassaukade, just outside the city centre, shortly after midnight. He was attempting to cross the road at the time but it is unclear exactly what happened or if the minibus was speeding.

According to AT5, he was thrown off the bike and hit a parked car, then landed on the tarmac. The police minibus has a large dent and broken windscreen, showing the impact was considerable, the broadcaster said.

The accident is being investigated by an different police unit, AT5 said.
