Amsterdam university and the city’s hbo college have decided to end their administrative alliance after two reports said the expected benefits had not been delivered.

The university and college have had a joint board, library and IT department  for the past 13 years. At the time, officials hoped the move would boost the number of students moving from the college to the university.

However, most HvA students who go on to university tend to leave the city, and just 12% sign up for the UvA, the Volkskrant said. By contrast, 11% go to the VU to study, the city’s other university.

The two institutions had originally planned a full merger but that was vetoed by the government. The combined institutions have over 80,000 students and 9,000 staff.
