Volunteers clear 19,000 kilos of waste from Dutch beaches in two weeks

The annual clean up of the Dutch North Sea coast generated 19,000 kilos of waste this year, foundation Stichting De Noordzee said on Monday.

In total 2,300 volunteers picked up waste from the beaches over a two week period, clearing 350 kilometres of coastline of rubbish. Among this year’s finds: a message in a bottle from Britain, a toilet seat, a cow skin, a bra and the spine of an adult porpoise, Trouw reported.

This year’s haul is much higher than the 11,555 kilos of waste collected in 2015, but this is likely to be due to the weather, the foundation said. Records show the amount of waste in the sea is unchanged.
