Dutch students who want to study abroad often find it too complicated or expensive or their courses don’t allow it, according to research by the two big student organisations.

Some 70% of hbo college and 35% of university students who want to go abroad don’t actually make it, the research involving 159 students found.

‘There are still too many obstacles to students studying abroad, even though universities encourage it to prepare students for the international labour market,’ Julia Verheul, deputy chairman of the LSVb student union told broadcaster NOS.

‘The European borders are open but not in the educational programmes,’ said ISO chairman Jan Sinnige. ‘It we want to stimulate internationalisation, we have to make it possible.’
